In the studio with… Joe Horner

We’ve been lucky enough to work with photographer Joe Horner many times over the years - it’s always been a pleasure.

With a diverse portfolio including product and brand work, events and portraiture - winning the British Portrait Award 2019 and the Portrait of Humanity Awards 2021 - Joe has more recently become known for his experimental floral works (featured in Elle and Vogue) that play with mirror, ice and water.

Do you have a favourite image that you’ve created?

At the moment I would have to say this is my favourite photos I’ve taken. But It’s changes every week haha.

What’s the most interesting way that you’ve captured a moment?

It has to be the first time I decided to freeze some flowers to see what would happen. It just blew my mind and I couldn't stop experimenting.

How did you begin your career as a photographer?

My grandad was a photographer in WW2, so I’ve always had an interest in it. But having my first 35mm camera was what really solidified it for me.

We really enjoyed working with you Joe, you bring creative ideas to the table. What do you enjoy most about your work and where do you draw your inspirations from?

Thank you! I enjoy working with you and other creative companies that allow me the freedom to create what I love. If you look at my work you will see nature is a big influence for me. I grew up with a very green fingered mum and she got me hooked.

What would you say the future of imagery creation is?

Everyday photography will always have it place, but the idea of augmented reality in photography seems very exciting.

If you could meet any photographer, who would it be?

My grandad for sure. He passed away when I was very young, so to have the chance to talk all thing photography with him would mean everything.

We’re in the era of self-documentation using smartphones and social media, how do you think this will affect photography in the future?

Yes! Started with taking sweet profile pics for my Myspace page. For me it just shows how important imagery really is. Moving with times is so important so that you don’t get left behind. I’m just going with the flow and excited to see what the future holds.
